Ten-day review

Health Secretary Sajid Javid also said there will be a 10-day internal review starting this weekend of vendor prices and service standards for tests to be passed by those who have returned. in England on days two and eight of their arrival. from abroad.
Mr Javid said the cost of PCR testing can be “a hindrance” for people eagerly awaiting summer vacation.
Consumers and families must be protected from “operating practices,” according to Javid, who has said he wants to ensure that high-quality tests are available at a reasonable price.
NHS Test and Trace advertises these tests alongside private company testing packages and they are available for purchase to meet UK government testing requirements for international travel.

“Suppliers act like cowboys”

Javid said he has ordered his department to urgently review the list of private vendors on gov.uk to ensure pricing is more clear and transparent.
He added: “Any supplier found to be misleading the public will be kicked out.
“Too many providers are acting like cowboys and it must stop. The public should be allowed to enjoy their summer vacation without facing excessive costs or anxiety. “

Call for more affordable testing

Airport Operators Association chief executive Karen Dee, who described the cost of travel testing as “exorbitant,” said: “However, this small reduction is little more than tinkering and does not go far enough. to significantly reduce the costs of traveling. “
She called on the government to “master the testing and replace expensive PCR tests with more affordable rapid tests for low-risk countries and align international travel with the rest of the economy.”
The price cut comes as the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) said it was looking at whether there were “immediate steps” the government could take amid concerns about the high cost. PCR tests for trips abroad.
The competition watchdog had previously confirmed it would look into testing issues, following a request from Javid, but said it would give its recommendations “within the next month”.
Now the watchdog has said he is also considering “measures that may be considered in the interim” to address what he described as a “particularly urgent problem”.
The CMA said it was examining three areas – whether individual PCR providers could violate their obligations under consumer law and should be subject to enforcement action; whether there are structural problems in the PCR testing market, affecting price or reliability; and whether there are immediate actions the government can take in the interim.
Some vendors with PCR tests that meet minimum standards charge £ 200 or more.
This week, Tory MP Henry Smith, who is chairman of the Future of Aviation all-party parliamentary group, said private Covid testing should be capped at £ 40.
He said this would allow more people to travel abroad, putting aviation “on a sustainable path to recovery.”
