United took all three points against Wolves on Sunday night thanks to a lone goal from Mason Greenwood at the Molineux Stadium, as they carried their unbeaten away record to 28 games.
But performance was poor throughout the 90 minutes, with Wolves creating several chances and goalkeeper David De Gea making a superb double save to keep the game 0-0 in the second half.
Former United captain Keane highlighted the midfielder options available to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and criticized Brazilian defensive midfielder Fred, saying he didn’t know what the 28-year-old was up to was good, if any.
Speaking as a post-match expert on Sky Sports, Keane said: “Sometimes I think if you’re going to play midfield for a big club you have to hang your hat on something to say that ‘ he’s brilliant going forward or he’s brilliant defensively or he’s got a purpose in him or he’s good at… I don’t see any of them in Fred, any of them.
” I think [Scott] McTominay has a chance to be a player. Matic, ah you know… would any of them join the Manchester City squad? Or Liverpool or Chelsea? I don’t see it, so I don’t know the combination.
Keane was then asked if he thought it could cost them in their quest for a first Premier League title since 2013, and was adamant in his response.
“I think that’s exactly where they will fail and I still know he did well today and received applause, but the goalkeeper. “
