The fallout from Rio Ferdinand’s comments on Phil Jones continues to rumble as he lashes out at TalkSPORT for criticizing his point of view.
On Monday, Ferdinand was scathing at Jones – saying the injured Manchester United center-back was a ‘waste of time’ at Old Trafford and should ‘find a new club’.
Former Ferdinand West Ham and England teammate Trevor Sinclair was among those on TalkSPORT on Wednesday to condemn his comments – saying he had ‘crossed the line’.

Speaking on TalkSPORT, Trevor Sinclair slammed Ferdinand for his remarks on Jones
Following Sinclair’s point of view, Ferdinand brandished it with others on TalkSPORT’s “clowns”
But Ferdinand hit back at Sinclair and his TalkSPORT colleagues Jim White and Simon Jordan for discussing his views.
Sports media Three Sixty TV shared a clip of TalkSPORT staff discussing Ferdinand’s remarks on Instagram, which he called the trio “clowns.”
Jones suffered a nightmare a few years on the injury table and played for the first time in 19 months in a closed-door friendly against Burnley earlier this month. The center-back has two more years on his contract after the four-year contract extension he signed in 2019.
Ferdinand claimed the 29-year-old was taking the place of an academy player in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s squad and criticized the club and the defender for signing the new deal, with Sinclair claiming the former United defender had “crossed the line” with his comments.
Sinclair told TalkSPORT, “Of course he (Jones) is going to accept (the new contract). He probably has aspirations to get into the first team.
“I look at Phil Jones, I see a player who has been crippled with injuries over the years, all kinds of injuries as well.
Jones has spent the past 19 months recovering from injury but returned to a friendly this month
“I don’t see a bad egg, I’m looking at him, I think he looks like a good pro, he’s not going to cause a lot of problems, he has a family, he has kids, he has to try to maximize the amount of finance he earns during his career.
“Why would he refuse a contract with Mancheter United?” I think the only people who need to be criticized are the people who offered him the contract because it didn’t work out again.
“For Rio to come and criticize him and say he should leave the club and take the opportunity of an academy player to enter the first team, I’m not happy with Rio about it , I think he crossed the line for me. ‘
Jones has two more years on his £ 130,000-a-week contract at Old Trafford and wants to rebuild his career at United. Despite having spent most of his career at United on the injury board, the Red Devils hierarchy offered Jones a four-year contract extension in 2019, which keeps him linked with Old Trafford until 2023.
However, his chances of regaining a regular starting spot are slim following the £ 42million arrival of Raphael Varane from Real Madrid and Ferdinand ended his former teammate’s stay at Old Trafford.
Ferdinand claimed Jones has an academy place in United’s first-team
The 42-year-old has claimed Jones’s exit is long overdue and believes the defender should have been taken off before Chris Smalling left for Rome in 2019.
“He is currently playing the youth squad in this squad,” Ferdinand told Vibe with FIVE.
“He had too many injuries… I was on the same team as Phil Jones, he came from Blackburn when he was young, everyone said he was going to be this great player.
“Huge potential, but injuries completely destroyed his career, and then confidence issues at times as well.
“He never managed to impose himself fully in the team. Whether it’s injuries, lack of form, lack of confidence. I think he should have left a long time ago. He should have left before Chris Smalling. Find a new club and play football.
Jones has not played for United since the 6-0 FA Cup win over Tranmere on January 26, 2020
Ferdinand added: “He has lacked consistency throughout his career at Man United. It is a fact, for all the reasons I have indicated before.
“I am baffled by how he always got a new contract at the club given his last years at the club. It doesn’t make sense to me how you get a new contract.
“I remember that at the time, you had to do an absolute transplant to get a new contract. We should perform, we should be an essential member of the team. Phil Jones is not that.
‘He did well. Listen, good luck to him if you can get it. Staying at Man United is a great gig, but I consider it a person, are you really going to be happy to be sitting there all year?
‘I think [Danny] Drinking water was a bit the same [at Chelsea]. It’s pretty easy to sit there for a bit, to hide behind the curtains.
Sinclair blasted Ferdinand over comments on Jones’ four-year contract in 2019
“To be fair to Phil Jones, I didn’t see him come out and talk and clarify, he might have had injuries that we don’t know. But if he was in good shape and sat there the way he was, sign a new deal and stay and don’t go out on loan… that’s not what a footballer wants to do.
“There are players who are happy to just sit down and clubs and not play and relax. Winston Bogarde did it at Chelsea for about three or four years. Signed a big deal and commuted from Holland.
“If I was on the team with someone like that, I wouldn’t talk to them. It’s a waste of time, why should I chat with you and energize you, taking that away from my other teammates who are here to play and fight for 90 minutes every week.
Sportsmail revealed this month that United boss Solskjaer plans to use Jones as one of five center-backs following Varane’s signing.
