Indiana Representative Jim Banks, who served in Afghanistan, blamed Biden for the attack.
“The responsibility for this tragedy rests entirely on the shoulders of Joe Biden,” Mr. Banks said. “His incompetence means American blood has been shed. It was preventable and unforgivable!
Minority Parliamentary Leader Kevin McCarthy has called on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to recall Congress to the session so members can be briefed and vote on Wisconsin Representative Mike Gallagher’s legislation to keep the troops in Afghanistan until every American is out of the country.
“In the meantime, President Biden must take decisive action to protect our troops, citizens and allies regardless of an arbitrary deadline,” McCarthy said in a statement.
Texas Representative Dan Crenshaw, who lost an eye in Afghanistan, said Mr Biden must address the problems created by the president.
“We are still at war. You didn’t ‘end the war’ you just gave the enemy a new advantage, ”he tweeted. “Go on the offensive, establish your superiority and don’t leave until all of our citizens and allies are safe. “
Michigan Representative Peter Meijer, who visited Afghanistan earlier this week with Democratic Representative Seth Moulton of Massachusetts, called the attack the worst possible outcome.
“Heartbreaking and horrific news – a nightmarish scenario that we feared,” he said.
Senator Lindsey Graham has called for the reopening of Bagram Air Base after a suicide bomb attack at Hamid Karzai International Airport in Kabul that injured up to three US Marines and killed several civilians.
“I pleaded for days for the Bagram air base to be reopened because the Kabul airport is very difficult to defend and was the only outlet for evacuation,” the Republican senator from South Carolina tweeted Thursday.
Mr. Graham said the United States has the ability to establish a presence in Bagram to continue to displace the Americans and their allies.
“The takeover of Bagram would put our military at risk, but I think those involved in the operation would readily accept the risk as it would restore our honor as a nation and save lives,” Graham tweeted.
Graham’s remarks come as news of the airport explosion broke in Kabul.
“We can confirm that the explosion at Abbey Gate was the result of a complex attack that claimed a number of American and civilian casualties,” Pentagon spokesman John Kirby said. “We can also confirm at least one other explosion at or near the Baron Hotel, a short distance from Abbey Gate. We will continue to update.
