Recall of Ram pickups; Defective side air bags can project shrapnel

DETROIT – Stellantis is recalling more than 266,000 pickup trucks, primarily in North America, as side air bags can explode without warning and project shrapnel into the passenger compartment.

This is the second major pickup truck recall in the past two months for the same issue.

Stellantis, formerly Fiat Chrysler, says the recall covers certain Ram 2500 and 3500 heavy duty trucks from the 2015 through 2020 model years. Also included are certain previous generation Ram 1500 pickups known as Classic, from 2015 through 2020. The latest version of the Ram 1500 is not affected.

Stellantis said in a statement Friday that pickup truck airbag inflators were contaminated with moisture during a supplier’s manufacturing process. The metal cartridges containing the inflator can rupture, even if the airbags are not deployed in a crash.

An inflator ruptured, but Stellantis says there were no injuries.

The company says it will notify customers when they can schedule the service. Homeowners with concerns or questions can call (800) -853-1403.

Last month, General Motors recalled more than 400,000 pickup trucks in the United States for the same issue.
