The director, whose films include Pulp Fiction and Jackie Brown, explained that he made the personal commitment after she failed to support his ambitions.
He recalls an experience in which his mother sided with his teachers when he was reprimanded for writing screenplays in school when he was only 12 years old.
Speaking on a recent episode of The moment podcast, hosted by Billion co-creator Brian Koppelman, Tarantino, 58, said his teachers saw this “as a provocative act of rebellion.”
After he got into trouble he said his mother was “bitching me about this … and then in the middle of her little tirade, she said,” Oh, and by the way, that little “writing career”, with the quotes finger and all. That little “writing career” you’re doing? This shit is over.
Tarantino added, “When she said that to me in that sarcastic way, I was like, ‘OK, ma’am, when I become a successful writer, you will never see a dime of my success. There will be no home for you. There’s no vacation for you, no Elvis Cadillac for mom. You don’t get anything. Because you said that.
When asked if he “stuck to it” Tarantino replied, “Yeah. I helped her with a jam with the IRS. But no house. No Cadillac, no house.
He added, “There are consequences for your words when dealing with your children. Remember that there are consequences for your sarcasm about what is important to them.
Although not confirmed, Tarantino’s mother Connie Zastoupil is believed to be around 75 years old.
Her second husband, Curtis Zastoupil, whom she met when she moved the family to Los Angeles, is said to have “encouraged” Tarantino’s ambition to make films.
Tarantino’s most recent film, Once upon a time in hollywood, was released in 2019. A running theory about the film suggests that it is actually a crossover with Tarantino’s 2012 film. Django Unchained.
