Rafal Majka of the United Arab Emirates won stage 15 of the Vuelta a Espana on Sunday with a solo breakaway to victory on an epic 85km course, while Odd Christian Eiking of Intermarché retained the leader’s red jersey in the general classification.
British Ineos rider Adam Yates ousted all the main competitors in this mountainous race for 15 seconds, with Frenchman Guillaume Martin remaining second overall and defending Jumbo champion Primoz Roglic third with six stages remaining.
It was the first stage victory in four years for Poland’s Majka, who played a key role in the United Arab Emirates’ Tour de France victory with Tadej Pogacar in July.
Norwegian overall leader Christian Eiking defied expectations by retaining his red jersey during a mountainous weekend where the main contenders for the title largely kept their powder dry.
Enric Mas and Miguel Angel Lopez round out the top five, while Yates and his team manager Egan Bernal are still on hand for the 2021 title.
The result means that everything will be played out over the last five days.
Monday is a rest day and Tuesday a flat stage where Fabio Jakobsen from Deceuninck can seal the green jersey for the sprint points.
There are then three big mountain stages, a hilly one and a long individual time trial until Santiago de Compostela next Sunday.
