Ontarian drowns in Alberta lake in Ironman triathlon – .

A 47-year-old Ontarian died Sunday after drowning in the Ironman 70.3 Calgary triathlon in Harmony Lake, Rocky View County, Alta, RCMP said.

At approximately 8 a.m., the RCMP received a drowning report.

Ironman said he was “incredibly saddened” to confirm the participant’s death.

“During the swim portion of Sunday’s race, swim safety personnel recognized the athlete in distress in need of immediate medical attention,” Ironman said via email.

The race volunteers got the competitor out of the water, started CPR and called EMS, Mounties said.

“The patient was indeed already in critical condition, putting his life at risk when he was unfortunately removed from the water,” EMS said.

The victim died instantly.

“We share our deepest sympathies with the athlete’s family and friends and will continue to offer our support as they go through this very difficult time,” said Ironman, thanking the first responders for providing the athlete medical assistance.
