John McClain, a Waco native who graduated from Baylor in 1975, covered the NFL, including the Oilers and Texans, for more than four decades in the Houston Chronicle. He worked for the Waco Tribune Herald from 1973 to 1976, when he accepted a position with The Chronicle. to cover the World Hockey Association’s original Houston Eros.
McClain has a Professional Football Hall of Fame plaque in Canton, Ohio, as the 2006 recipient of the Dick McCann Memorial Award presented annually by the Pro Football Writers of America to a writer for his long and distinguished coverage of the NFL. He is the former president of the Pro Football Writers of America. In 2019, he was voted into the second media class of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame and also received the Distinguished Alumni Award from the Baylor Line Foundation.

He is a member of the Professional Football Hall of Fame Selection Committee, the Professional Football Hall of Fame Senior Committee and the Texas Sports Hall of Fame Selection Committee.

In 2015, he was named Gridiron Legend in Texas, becoming the third member of the media behind Dave Campbell and Mickey Herskowitz. In 2019, he was voted into the Second Class of Media Laureates of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame.

McClain can be heard six times a week on Texans Sports Radio 610 flagship station in Houston. He also appears on numerous sports talk shows across the country.
