The rear-wheel-drive Z changes from the 370Z’s 3.7-liter V6 to a new 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, also used in the Infiniti Q60 coupe. In addition to delivering 68 hp more than the 370Z’s engine, the new unit produces 350 lb-ft of torque at 5,600 rpm, 30% more than the previous model.
The Z is offered with a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic. Both housings offer a premium launch assist control system, and manual models feature a carbon fiber composite driveshaft and downshift function.
Nissan says one of the main goals of the new Z was to build on the driving characteristics of previous generation models. Nissan says the new model offers better body stiffness than the 370Z, along with a new electronic power steering system and wider front tires to improve cornering performance. The automatic variants will offer Standard and Sport drive modes, with the latter offering faster acceleration, sportier steering, improved sound and revisions to the car’s dynamic control settings.
The new Z features styling cues that echo the original model from the 1969 lineup, and retains the long hood and short rear that characterize the model lineup. Nissan design boss Alfonso Albaisa said the new design is meant to “travel between decades, including the future”.
The new model gains LED headlights, featuring two semicircles that draw inspiration from those of the 1970s Fairlady 240ZG, while the design of the front of the car has a profile based on the original model. There is also an aerodynamic front splitter and the top Z Performance models also have a rear spoiler.
The interior is intended to blend modern technology, including an 8.0-inch infotainment touchscreen in the center of the dashboard, with classic Z design cues. There is an analog display setup for the driver. Nissan says it sought advice from racing drivers on fine-tuning the interior layout, which it says can be seen in the customizable 12.3-inch digital display setup.
