Health officials in France activated an emergency plan on Tuesday on the Mediterranean island of Corsica as a fourth wave of Covid infections spread across the country.

The government has also announced that it is reactivating a package of measures designed to support medical staff as it prepares for a new influx of cases.

More and more popular coastal areas of France have reintroduced the compulsory wearing of masks in order to stem the rising tide of coronavirus.

Health officials in Corsica said they were providing more intensive care beds to Covid patients and mobilizing medical staff as the occupancy rate of hospitals in Bastia, one of the two main cities in the world. island, exceeded 79%.

The news came a day after Guadalupe became the third French overseas territory to announce a return to partial lockdown due to a “catastrophic” increase in Covid cases there.

A nighttime curfew and some daytime restrictions start from Wednesday.

Martinique, another French Caribbean island 190 kilometers (120 miles) to the south, returned to containment on Friday, while Reunion Island entered partial containment over the weekend.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Jean Castex chaired a meeting of the interministerial crisis management team.

They agreed to use the military to provide more intensive care beds to the overseas territories, his office said.

The government also announced on Tuesday that it would reintroduce overtime bonuses for hospital workers, as well as compensation for paid time off they were unable to take due to work pressure.

The situation in Corsica was probably undermined by the traditional wave of departures and arrivals of holidaymakers at the end of July: more than 130,000 people were traveling there last weekend.

Corsica had already reintroduced the wearing of the obligatory mask in the main cities of the island in mid-July.

Several seaside resorts in France have also reintroduced the wearing of compulsory masks less than two months after the authorities lifted the restriction.

In northwestern France, Brittany’s Finistère on Monday ordered people to cover their mouths and noses outside after an increase in Covid cases. Wearing a mask has been compulsory outdoors in Brittany Morbihan since last week.

Officials at the foot of the Pyrenees, on the border with Spain, and at Lake Annecy, at the foot of the Alps, have implemented similar measures.

Across France, the Delta variant of the virus is increasing the number of hospital admissions, public health figures released on Tuesday showed.

Intensive care patients now number 1,331 against 978 a week ago, while the deaths of 57 other people in the past 24 hours have pushed France’s death toll to more than 112,000.
