“I dedicate this medal to Simone. I wouldn’t be here today without her. “
MyKayla Skinner is now a silver medalist at the Tokyo Olympics in an event she never expected to compete in.
She was able to compete in the vaulting competition on Sunday after Simone Biles pulled out of the event to focus on her sanity.
“I dedicate this medal to Simone,” said the 24-year-old. “I wouldn’t be here today without her. I told her I would make this one for her. all of us. “
MyKayla, who will be retiring after these Olympics, originally believed her career would end a week earlier, before the all-around team final competition which saw the U.S. team win the silver medal.
But it was not yet in her cards to leave, and she had to put on her competition leotard one last time. “I feel so honored to finish the vault final because I didn’t think it was going to happen,” she added. “I worked really hard, took time off from college and was a supply teacher in 2016.”
Her clean routine earned her a combined score of 14.916, and she placed second behind Brazilian Rebeca Andrade and ahead of South Korea’s Yeo Seojeong.
“There have been so many times I’ve wanted to quit in the past two years and throughout my gymnast career,” she wrote on Instagram after her podium. “I don’t think most people know how hard this sport is on your body and mind. I’m grateful that I never gave up and that so many of you never gave up on me ❤️ unfinished business… COMPLETED. “
And we couldn’t be prouder!
