Mom Saved 5-Year-Old Son By “Hitting” Mountain Lion, US Authorities Say – .

SAN FRANCISCO – A mountain lion who attacked a five-year-old boy and dragged the child across his lawn in southern California was shot dead by a wildlife officer, authorities said on Saturday.

The 65-pound (30-kilogram) mountain lion attacked the boy while playing near his home Thursday in Calabasas and “dragged him about 45 yards” across the lawn, said Captain Patrick Foy, door – spoken by the Department of California. Fish and wildlife.

The boy sustained significant traumatic injuries to his head and upper torso, but was in stable condition in a Los Angeles hospital, Foy said.

“The real hero of this story is his mother because she absolutely saved her son’s life,” said Foy. The mother was inside the house when she heard noise outside.

“She ran out of the house and started hitting and hitting the mountain lion with her bare hands and pulled him away from her son,” he said.

The parents immediately took the boy to hospital, where law enforcement was informed of the attack and dispatched a wildlife officer to the scene.

Once home, the officer discovered a cougar crouching in the bushes with its “ears back and hissing at it,” Foy said.

“Due to his demeanor and the proximity to the attack, the guard felt he was probably the attacking lion and, to protect public safety, shot and killed him on the spot,” said Saturday the wildlife department in a statement.

Subsequent DNA tests confirmed that the lion was responsible for the attack on the child, the statement said.

Another puma spotted in the area was tranquilized and released back into the wild after being tested to ensure he was not involved in the attack.
