MIAMI (AP) – U.S. Representative Matt Gaetz from Florida fled to Southern California, marrying girlfriend Ginger Luckey on Saturday in a small ceremony on Catalina Island.
The controversial 39-year-old Republican, who is being investigated as part of a sex trafficking investigation, announced the marriage on his personal Twitter page. He exclaimed “I love my wife! With a picture of them together – him in a sports coat, her in a white dress.
Vanity Fair reports that Sergio Gor, a former staff member of Senator Rand Paul, hosted the ceremony which was attended by around 40 people. The couple had previously announced that they would be getting married next year.
Gaetz was in Iowa on Thursday with Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, speaking at a rally that is part of a nationwide tour where they falsely claim the 2020 election was stolen from President Donald Trump and downplay COVID-19 pandemic.
Luckey, 26, is from Southern California and works for a company that focuses on extending the life of products made from plant-based materials.
Gaetz is being investigated as part of an investigation that led to the arrest and plea agreement of his close friend Joel Greenberg, a former Seminole Earl, Florida tax collector .
Greenberg pleaded guilty last May to six federal crimes, including child sex trafficking, identity theft, criminal harassment, wire fraud and conspiracy to bribe a public official. His plea deal with prosecutors requires continued cooperation with an ongoing sex trafficking investigation.
Gaetz, who represents a large part of the Florida Panhandle, was not mentioned in Greenberg’s plea deal. But Greenberg’s cooperation could play a role in an ongoing investigation into Gaetz’s alleged sexual relationship with a 17-year-old girl. He has repeatedly denied wrongdoing.
