Manchester United have finalized the signing of center-back Raphael Varane from Real Madrid on a four-year contract.
The 28-year-old won three La Liga titles and four Champions League trophies with Real during a 10-year stint.
“Manchester United are one of the most iconic clubs in world football,” said World Cup winner Varane.
“The chance to come here and play in the Premier League is something I couldn’t refuse.
“There is a lot more that I want to accomplish in my career and I know that I am joining a team full of great players who will all have the same determination to win games and trophies.
“After talking to the manager I can see how much progress has been made over the past few seasons and now I join a group ready to play at the highest level.
“I want to have an impact here and I will give my all to be part of the illustrious history of this club. “
Varane started his career at the French side of Lens and made 360 appearances for Real.
He has won 79 international caps and played in France’s four matches at Euro 2020 this summer when they were eliminated in the last 16.
United are a long-time admirer of Varane, whose contract at the Bernabeu was due to expire next summer.
Former manager Sir Alex Ferguson initially made a deal for the player ahead of his move to Madrid, and Jose Mourinho was also keen to sign the defender during his time at Old Trafford.
“I am absolutely delighted that we have managed to get one of the best defenders in the world over the past 10 years,” United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer said.
“Raphael is a proven winner who we have followed over a long period of time and we know how dedicated a professional he is.
“We have a great depth of international defenders and he will add his immense skills and leadership to this group. He’s a unique defender with a rare combination of high profile attributes that I know rub off on our young players.
“He won everything but I know he is still determined to succeed. I can’t wait to welcome him to the team. “
Varane is United’s third signing of this transfer window, following the £ 73million arrival from England winger Jadon Sancho of Borussia Dortmund and the re-signing of goalie Tom Heaton.
He is expected to team up with Harry Maguire at the center of United’s defense, where other options include Sweden international Victor Lindelof and Ivorian Eric Bailly, who signed a new contract in April.
