With less than eight minutes left in United’s last pre-season friendly before next Saturday’s Premier League opener against Leeds United, Greenwood jumped on a defensive mix between Toffees goalkeeper Jordan Pickford and the rear left Lucas Digne.
The latter brought it back to his teammate between the sticks, but Pickford could only grope him in the path of Greenwood, who brought the ball back inside the box with his stomach before coldly inserting it into an empty net on his right foot.
Although the net was empty, Greenwood always kept his cool and calmly put the ball away to score his first goal since United’s 2-1 loss to Leicester City in May.
Although he should always have marked where the opportunity presented itself, some United supporters reacted on social media.
Below, MEN Sports took a close look at what some of them had to say.
As you can see from the posts displayed above, there is a real sense of excitement about Greenwood’s future, with a fan pushing him to become a regular source of goals for United this season.
Greenwood, who turns 20 in less than two months, scored 12 goals in all competitions last season and will no doubt be determined to improve that number this time around.
Since Greenwood scored the opener, United have doubled their advantage thanks to Harry Maguire, then scored a third thanks to Bruno Fernandes
As of this writing, the score remains 3-0 in favor of the Reds.
