In 1971, car enthusiasts got their first glimpse of the Lamborghini Countach – the LP500, to be more precise. Over the years and decades that followed, the Countach has grown into an iconic supercar, combining design symbolizing speed with luxurious attention to detail. The Countach has a fascinating history, both in terms of creating and implementing some of its features.

And now the Countach is 50 years old. And if you thought Lamborghini might have something planned for this anniversary, you’d be there. At Quail, Lamborghini announced a new edition of the legendary supercar, the Countach LPI 800-4.

Writing at The Verge, Andrew J. Hawkins has more details on this new, very limited edition iteration of the Countach. First of all; unlike previous Countaches, this one is a hybrid. The LPI in its name stands for Longitudinale Posteriore Ibrido – which, Hawkins notes, translates to “Longitudinal Posterior Hybrid.”

As for how it compares to its predecessors, Hawkins writes that “the revived Countach is not as sloped as its ancestor, with a rounder nose and less stern tail.”

In a statement, Automobili Lamborghini President and CEO Stephan Winkelmann connected the LPI 800-4 to earlier editions of the model. “The Countach LPI 800-4 pays homage to this Lamborghini heritage, but it is not retrospective: it imagines how the iconic Countach of the 70s and 80s could have evolved into an elite super sports model of this decade”, did he declare.

Lamborghini only manufactures 112 of them, with delivery scheduled for Q1 2022. This should be a huge pleasure for 112 supercar enthusiasts.
