Kyle Lowry to become first jersey retired by Toronto Raptors – .

Kyle Lowry was Mr. Raptor.

There were questions about his commitment to the game and his leadership when in 2012 Houston traded Lowry to the Raptors for Gary Forbes and a first-round pick (used on Steven Adams). Since joining the Raptors, Lowry has been the face of the franchise, been an All-Star six times, made an All-NBA team and, most importantly, helped lead them to the 2019 NBA Championship.

Lowry is now in Miami as Toronto begins to move towards its next phase, but Lowry will always be a favorite in Toronto. Raptors president Larry Tanenbaum spoke to The Athletic’s Jared Wiess and said Lowry’s number will be taken – and that he may one day sign a one-day contract to remove a Raptor.

“He’ll be retiring as a Raptor and his number will absolutely go up there,” Tanenbaum said, confirming that Lowry will have his number 7 retired. “Honor will be the first (for the Raptors) and I love Kyle.

“I like his leadership. I like his intelligence. I love his passion.

He deserves it. Before Kawhi Leonard showed up and led the Raptors into a ring, Lowry had led the best streak in Raptors basketball history – they had won at least 48 games five years in a row and had deep playoffs.

Lowry was the best player on those teams and the face of the franchise in town. Someday there might be a statue of Lowry in Toronto, but he’ll definitely be the first Raptor to take his jersey off. A deserved honor.
