Music icon Kanye West has asked to legally change his name to his longtime nickname “Ye,” US media reported on Wednesday, citing documents filed in a Los Angeles court.
The 44-year-old wants to change his full name – Kanye Omari West – to a two-letter Ye, without a middle name or last name, according to NBC News and other U.S. media outlets.
The change was requested for “personal reasons” and must be approved by a judge, NBC said.
West has been calling himself Ye for quite some time, tweeting in 2018 that he was “the being officially known as Kanye West.” I am Ye ”.
He released an album of the same name the same year.
The Chicago-bred rapper and record producer has won 21 Grammys. He burst onto the rap scene on his production chops before delivering a series of critically acclaimed studio albums, selling over 20 million copies.
The spotlight recently shone on West more for her personal life than her artistry, after her nearly decade-long partner Kim Kardashian filed for divorce earlier this year.
Before the news broke, their union had been harassed for months by reports of marital difficulties. West has struggled with mental health issues and launched an unlikely and controversial foray into US presidential politics last year.
