Speaking with IndieWire, The suicide squad Writer / director James Gunn was asked whether or not he thought Marvel would ever release an R-rated movie.
I think they will, I think they will, I’m pretty sure they will. Not ‘Guardians’ though, because ‘Guardians’ are family movies, so it’s different. People say to themselves, “Finally, they let you do the R rating”. What would “Guardians” look like if they were rated R? I’m like, ‘But that’s not the case.’
James Gunn followed: « I could go and do an R rated Drax movie, which I would love to do, like the barbarian Drax. But the ‘Guardians’ movies are fables, and I don’t think of them that way. I don’t write them like that. It’s a different kind of movie, and you can have some creepy gore and darkness in there and stuff like that, which is good, but it’s not the rock and roll of “Suicide Squad”. There are characters who definitely lend themselves to an R-rated more than others, and we’ve always heard rumbles from Marvel entertaining the notion of an R-rated MCU movie, and the most likely contender is the third Dead Pool movie. Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige confirmed earlier this year that Deadpool 3 is still in development as an R-rated film, but it remains to be seen if the film will be enough as rated R as its predecessors. Aside from Deadpool, what MCU characters might you see in an R-rated adventure?

Assemble a collection of drawbacks including Bloodsport, Peacemaker, Captain Boomerang, Ratcatcher 2, Savant, King Shark, Blackguard, Javelin, and everyone’s favorite psychopath, Harley Quinn. Then, heavily arm them and drop them (literally) on the remote, enemy-infused island of Corto Maltese.
