NEW YORK (WABC) – Public health experts are sounding the alarm over an increase in COVID-related hospitalizations among children across the country, including in the tri-state region. After declining in early summer, Childhood COVID-19 cases have steadily increased in recent weeks as schools are set to reopen.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and the Children’s Hospital Association (CHA) found that nearly 94,000 new cases of COVID-19 in children were reported earlier this month, a “substantial” increase continuing.

While the worst numbers have been reported in Louisiana and Florida, they could worsen elsewhere quickly as public health officials voice concerns over the highly contagious delta variant amid continued hesitation over vaccines.

The latest data from the White House COVID-19 team shows that hospitalizations for people under the age of 17 have been on the rise since mid-July in New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

As of August 7, they had returned to levels not seen since May, but still below the peaks of April and September.
