Hay Festival ‘harassment’ chief kicked out after board upholds complaint – .


Literature festival founder Hay resigned after the bullying allegations against him were confirmed.

Peter Florence, 56, was suspended last October for what one insider described as “a particular style of management”.

Yesterday, it emerged that the festival board had unanimously approved an independent review finding that he had committed serious misconduct.

He said the complaint was supported by more than half of the Welsh festival team and the decision came after a “thorough and careful process”.

“The board will now be looking for new leadership for the world-renowned nonprofit,” he added.

It is understood that the case concerns a complaint lodged by a member of staff.

Mr Florence retaliated last night by declaring: “My role had become untenable because of the conduct of the council and its insistence on holding a disciplinary hearing in my absence while I was on sick leave following a breakdown. . “

He said he was incredibly proud of the festival and hoped it would continue to grow stronger.

Caroline Michel, president of the event, insisted the decision was not linked to an allegation that a worker from Hay sent to the United Arab Emirates to start a branch of the festival was sexually assaulted by a member of the the reigning family of Abu Dhabi.

She said Mr Florence did not initiate disciplinary proceedings for nine months after his suspension, leaving the board of directors with no choice but to act.

She added that the fact that more than half of the staff supported the complaint illustrated the “number” of those who supported it.

Mr Florence did not run this year’s festival, a digital event held in May under the direction of CFO Tania Hudson.

Nicknamed the “King of the Hay”, he founded the festival with his parents, Norman and Rhoda, in 1988.

In 2019, he had the honor of serving as jury chairman for the Booker Prize – which sparked controversy by jointly presenting the prize to Bernardine Evaristo and Margaret Atwood.
