Manchester United’s victory over Leeds on Saturday was a moving performance that lit up Old Trafford.

Applause continues to flow for United players after the 5-1 win over rivals Leeds with the team making a statement for the remainder of the season.

Three Manchester United players have been named the BBC Sport Team of the Week. Treble hero Bruno Fernandes, star with four assists Paul Pogba and young striker Mason Greenwood.

BBC expert Garth Crooks, who made the selections, reserved particularly high praise for Pogba and Greenwood.

High comparisons

Crooks compared Pogba to Sir Bobby Charlton, while calling for more consistency from the Frenchman.

The analyst said: “He literally cut Leeds into ribbons in a demonstration of precision that I haven’t seen at Old Trafford since Bobby Charlton. But that’s where the problem with Pogba lies. You get all or nothing with it – unlike the great Charlton. “

Pogba’s four assists were a rare feat – achieved just seven times during the Premier League era – and topped his tally of three league assists last season. The win over Leeds showed what he is capable of and it is only fair to call on him to produce more regularly.

Crooks also compared Mason Greenwood to a trio of former United forwards, including Denis Law. He said he was very impressed with the way he got on the scoresheet.

He said: “I saw Denis Law, Frank Stapleton, Mark Hughes and Andy Cole lead the line for Manchester United, but not at 19. I can’t decide if the game has gotten any easier or if Greenwood has improved. What I do know is that the teenager succeeded in his goal with flying colors.

Keep Calm and carry on

United have been formidable on the first day of the season and the team must continue without getting carried away.

The home advantage worked in our favor on Saturday, but two away games follow. Only two teams have won away from 10 appearances in the Premier League opening weekend.

United will travel to Southampton next Sunday and then Wolves a week later.

If the team plays as well again, there will be no problem. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just has to make sure the team can keep up.

Two seasons ago, United beat Chelsea 4-0 on Matchday 1 of the season, followed by a draw and loss. United must ensure that this does not happen again.
