Baseball fans everywhere watched the Yankees de New York play against the Chicago White Sox in the Hollywood-inspired Field of Dreams game on Thursday night, making it the most-watched regular-season game in 16 years.
Over 5.9 million viewers watched the White Sox narrowly beat the Yankees 9-8 in MLB inaugural game Field of Dreams played in Dyersville, Iowa – right next to the filming site of the beloved 1989 film starring Kevin Costner.

According to FOX Sports PR, Thursday’s game set a record for the most-watched regular-season game since 2005, when the Yankees faced the Boston Red Sox in a contest that drew 5,909,000 viewers.

Audience peaked between 8:45 p.m. and 9 p.m. ET to reach just over 6 million.
Thursday’s game nearly ranked as the most broadcast regular baseball game in FOX Sports history, according to the network’s public relations team.
Surrounded by cornfields and other nostalgic details, the very first MLB game in Iowa did not disappoint.

“I think the reception this event has received has been so positive that we will be back,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said, via MLB.com.
“I think it’s pretty clear that we’ll be back next year and we’ll have to talk about it after that. But it’s so successful that it’s hard not to take the opportunity to do it again. ”
