“The only reason for an election is that Trudeau wants a majority,” read the slogan of the 37-second ad posted Friday.

The video shows Trudeau’s head stuck on Veruca Salt, a character in the 1971 film “Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory,” in which she complains about not getting what she wants.

The Conservative Party of Canada (CPC) was not available for immediate comment.

Trudeau is planning an early election for September 20 and is expected to make the announcement on Sunday, Reuters reported this week, as the ruling Liberals call for a vote two years ahead of schedule.

A poll by Abacus on Thursday put the Liberals at 37% and the Conservatives at 28%.

“Well, I suspect I never got your vote, but I agree the video is stupid. Unfortunately, they don’t ask my opinion on these things… ”Ontario CPC MP Scott Aitchison wrote on Twitter in response to a reader asking if the ad would make people vote Conservative.
