Chelsea are planning a loan of last resort for Atletico Madrid midfielder Saul Niguez, according to reports.

The European champions have already completed their major signing this month by landing Romelu Lukaku in a £ 97.5million deal with Inter.

Chelsea have targeted Sevilla center-back Jules Kounde this summer but are looking to offload Kurt Zouma at West Ham before continuing with the deal.

But according to The Telegraph, Chelsea are also exploring the possibility of a late effort to sign Saul from Atletico Madrid.

However, the report claims Chelsea’s candidacy to sign the Spain international hinges on the club’s ability to narrow down other Thomas Tuchel midfielder options that are not part of the first team’s plans.

Earlier this summer, reports claimed Manchester United were in talks with Saul’s agent to discuss a possible transfer to United.

It is understood Atletico were ready to allow the midfielder to leave if his valuation of € 45million (£ 38million) was reached.

So far Saul has appeared in both Atletico games in the new La Liga season and the Spanish champions have won victories against Celta Vigo and Elche.

Chelsea, meanwhile, are still looking to get rid of several fringe players before the window closes.

Tiemoue Bakayoko accepted a pay cut in order to join AC Milan on loan.

Davide Zappacosta is also back in Italy as he will join Atalanta on a permanent contract.

The European champions are also looking to move to both Ross Barkley and Danny Drinkwater.
