Cavalry FC beat FC Edmonton to advance to Canadian Championship quarter-finals – .

EDMONTON – Goals from Joe Mason and Ben Fisk helped Cavalry FC advance to the quarter-finals of the Canadian Championship with a 2-0 victory over FC Edmonton on Sunday.
Mason headed in the 31st minute to put the Calgary club ahead of their provincial rivals at Clarke Field in Edmonton. Jose Hernandez led a nice floating cross from Jose Escalante over the bar, with Mason there for the rebound.

The cavalry made it 2-0 in the 62nd minute when Fisk fed Mohamed Farsi in the box before recovering the ball straight away. Fisk’s low shot was then blocked by an Edmonton defender, but the ball jumped over goaltender Darlington Murasiranwa.

Cavalry backup keeper Tyson Farago, replacing Marco Carducci, saved the two shots he faced for the shutout, including a powerful strike from Jeannot Esua in the 25th minute that he knocked down the bar with a save plunging.

“Delighted with the way we handled their threats,” said cavalry coach Tommy Wheeldon Jr. “Because it’s their home park, coming here and keeping a clean sheet and scoring a few goals is always nice. . “

Cavalry FC will face the winner of the August 26 clash between Major League Soccer’s Vancouver Whitecaps and Canadian Premier League’s Victoria Pacific FC in the quarter-finals.

The Canadian Championships were first held in 2008.
