Britney Spears’ father is set to step down as his estate curator, US media reported Thursday, seemingly ending a bitter legal battle with his daughter.

Britney, 39, launched an offer last month to remove him from the controversial 13-year-old guardianship which she said amounted to “abuse.”

Jamie Spears’ attorney said at the time he would fight the move, disputing his daughter’s account. But TMZ and Variety cited legal documents on Thursday in which Spears said he would step down from his role.

“There is, in fact, no real reason to suspend or revoke Mr. Spears as registrar of the estate… and it is highly debatable whether a change of registrar at this time would be in Ms. Spears, ”the documents reportedly said.

“Nonetheless… he doesn’t think a public battle with his daughter over her continued service as a curator would be in her best interest.

“So even though he has to challenge this unwarranted impeachment request, Mr. Spears intends to work with the court and his daughter’s new lawyer to prepare for an orderly transition to a new Tory. “

– ‘Justification’ –

Variety magazine reported on a statement released by Britney’s attorney, Mathew Rosengart, welcoming the move and calling it “justification” for the singer.

“We are pleased that Mr. Spears and his attorney today acknowledged in a case that he must be withdrawn. It’s a justification for Britney, ”the statement said.

“We look forward to continuing our thorough investigation into the conduct of Mr. Spears and others over the past 13 years as he raised millions of dollars from his daughter’s estate, and I look forward to to take Mr. Spears’ affidavit in the near future. “

There was no immediate response from either lawyer to AFP’s requests for comment.

Britney Spears, who rose to fame as a teenager, suffered a very public breakdown in 2007 – when the shaved-head star attacked a paparazzi’s car at a gas station.

This led to her being placed under the unusual legal guardianship largely ruled by her father.

She quickly returned to the scene, released three albums, appeared on various TV shows, and even accepted a residency in Las Vegas.

But in January 2019, she abruptly announced that she was putting her performance on hold until further notice and was speaking out more and more about the guardianship.

She claimed in moving testimony in court and in social media posts that the arrangement amounted to “cruelty” and accused her father and others of taking advantage of the system.

Britney alleged in court that she was prevented from having a contraceptive IUD removed, despite wishing she had more children, and that she was forced to take drugs that made her feel ” drunk “.

She recently wrote on Instagram that she “isn’t going to be performing anytime soon on a stage with my dad taking care of what I wear, say, do or think”.

Jamie Spears’ removal is a long-standing request from dedicated global fans campaigning under the tagline #FreeBritney.

Supporters Thursday praised the development.

“She’ll hopefully post on instagram later today, but I think she’s celebrating right now,” @ Cheermaster500 tweeted

“I’m so happy for her too, and I celebrate by watching a Britney Spears concert. “
