The Montreal GYM gala took a dramatic turn on Saturday night when Mexican boxer Jeanette Zacarias Zapata left the stadium in an ambulance after a resounding knockout.
In a tweet on Sunday, promoter Yvon Michel said Zapata was currently in intensive care, accompanied by her partner and trainer.“All our thoughts and prayers are with him,” said Michel.
Quebec fighter Marie-Pier Houle eliminated Zapata, 18, at the end of the fourth round of a fight that was to last six. The international boxing event at the IGA Stadium in Jarry Park featured eight fights on August 28.
During the bout, Houle handed a solid left uppercut to Zapata who looked stunned, then threw a final right hook, shaking his opponent’s mouthguard.
Unable to recover after the bell rang, Zapata went into convulsions. His trainer, on-site paramedics and a medic assigned to the boxing event rushed to help.
It is not known if Zapata was conscious when she was carried out of the stadium on a stretcher.
