BBC to appoint Boris Johnson and Brexit journalist to lead news channels | United Kingdom

News that Jess Brammar was vying for the first BBC post raised eyebrows both Downing Street and within the organization itself when it emerged. BBC board member Sir Robbie Gibb has called for her not to be appointed on the grounds of bias.

Former Director of Communications Theresa May has warned BBC News and Current Affairs Director Fran Unsworth that she “cannot take this appointment” because “the government’s fragile confidence in the BBC will be broken ”if she did.
Downing Street also said the news called into question the commitment to fairness and diversity of opinion made by new chief executive Tim Davie when he was appointed last year.

Following his appointment, Davie told staff that the broadcaster “urgently… upholds and renews its commitment to fairness”.

He added: “If you want to be a opinionated columnist or partisan social media activist, then that’s a valid choice, but you shouldn’t be working at the BBC. “

In a tweet since deleted, Ms Brammar suggested black people would leave the UK if Mr Johnson was re-elected Prime Minister in 2019.
She also described Brexit as a popular but ‘less funny’ television drama.

In another article, Ms Brammar recommended buying a book on Sathnam Sanghera’s British imperialism “to rule out all racists who attack her”.

She also wrote on “how it is not even controversial to say that there is racism in the British press”.

Many tweets were posted while working for an online publication, The Huffington Post.

The 39-year-old has since deleted 12,000 tweets and made her Instagram account private.

Prior to working for The Huffington Post, Ms. Brammer held various senior positions with various broadcasters including ITV and the BBC.

A BBC spokesperson said: “We do not make routine commentary on recruitment processes.

“When we’re ready to make an announcement on this, we’ll make one. “
