Guwahati : Two-time Assam MP Sushanta Borgohain resigned from the majority of congressmen on Friday, blaming the “internal political atmosphere” within the party. Mr Borgohain, an MP for Thowra headquarters in upper Assam, said he would join the BJP later today.

He also left the state assembly and the president accepted his resignation. Mr Borgohain is the second Assam congressman to leave the party since the BJP government led by Himanta Biswa Sarma took over the state. Previously, Rupjyoti Kurmi, who was the only Congressman from the Tea Tribe community, had resigned as lawmaker in June and joined the BJP.

In his resignation letter to state congressman Bhupen Borah, Mr Borgohain said the situation in the Assam congress had forced him to make the “painful” decision despite his efforts to help the government. party to remain relevant in the state.

“Unfortunately, all efforts in this direction are in vain, forcing me to make this ultimate decision and the exact reasons for such a painful gesture on my part have already been conveyed to the senior leadership of the party both in the state. than at the center, ”Mr. Borgohain said in his farewell letter.

Sushanta Borgohain defeated Kushal Dowari by 2,049 votes. Mr. Borgohain obtained 47,949 votes while Mr. Dowari of the BJP obtained 45,900 votes.

With the departure of Mr. Borgohain, the strength of Congress in the 126-member assembly is reduced to 27, from 29 seats won in the elections earlier this year.
