The economist asked Holmes to hire his Stanford graduate grandson at Theranos, Tyler Schultz, who initially alerted him that something was wrong with the tech company.

Tyler reportedly tried to warn his grandfather about the problem, but was told to shut up. He then contacted the Wall Street Journal and denounced Holmes and Theranos in a series of explosive reports.

Holmes started medical technology company Theranos at the age of 19 after dropping out of Stanford University. Before allegations of fraud surfaced, Holmes was celebrated as a young visionary and achievement, often referred to as the “Steve Jobs Woman”.

She became known for her baritone voice and black turtlenecks, once boasting of owning over 150 items in an attempt to emulate Jobs.

Theranos, which closed in September 2018, claimed to have developed breakthrough technology that allows it to perform blood tests using samples much smaller than what is normally required – just a drop.

The tests have reportedly helped those fearful of needles, and the company also claimed it has automated machines that can test blood quickly.

Theranos raised hundreds of millions from investors and was valued at $ 9 billion in the mid-2010s, never proving that the blood test cartridges developed by the company actually worked.

However, a series of investigative articles by John Carreyrou in the Wall Street Journal and the work of medical researchers John Ioannidis and Eleftherios Diamandis revealed that the company’s claims about its tests were false.

Holmes agreed to pay a fine of $ 500,000 to the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).

She also renounced all of her Theranos shares after being accused of fraud, reducing her personal net worth to virtually zero.

In 2018, the U.S. District Attorney for the Northern District of California charged her with wire fraud and conspiracy charges, although her trial has been repeatedly delayed due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

In the lawsuit, which is scheduled to begin Aug.31 in San Jose, Calif., Prosecutors accused Holmes of defrauding patients and investors into believing his invention can accurately perform lab tests from a few drops of blood.

Holmes’ defense team argued that Holmes intended to create a device that worked, and that regulators and government investigators were being unfairly harsh due to the media scrutiny of Theranos.

The trail has been postponed three times due to the COVID-19 pandemic, in addition to Holmes’ pregnancy.
