Thousands of Hillsborough County public school students are being quarantined due to their exposure to COVID-19.

On Monday, the school district said 5,599 students were either isolated due to a positive case or quarantined due to exposure. This is an increase of about 1,200 students from Friday, when authorities said 4,477 students were to be quarantined.

The number includes students who have tested positive or who have been exposed, without a mask, to a positive case.

The district does not require that vaccinated students be quarantined after exposure unless they develop symptoms.

Meanwhile, 316 school district employees are also being quarantined, up from 289 on Friday.

The Hillsborough County School Board will hold an emergency meeting Wednesday at 1 p.m. to discuss the latest impacts and how best to mitigate the spread of the virus, “down to the mandatory face covering for all students and staff », A notice said the neighborhood.

The board will allow one hour of public comment at the meeting, which will be held in the school board auditorium.
