Waterloo –

Waterloo region health officials have recorded 20 new COVID-19 infections as well as more than a dozen variant cases of concern.

The last 20 cases bring the region’s total number of cases to 18,719, including 18,291 resolved infections, 134 active cases and 288 deaths.

Of the new cases, four are people between the ages of 10 and 19 and five are people in their twenties.

The number of infections confirmed as variant cases of concern increased by 13 in Thursday’s update, to 4,951.

The distribution of the variants of the region is as follows:

  • 3,124 are the Alpha variant, first identified in the UK and originally known as B.1.1.7
  • 21 are the beta variant, originally detected in South Africa and previously referred to as B.1.315
  • 98 are the Gamma variant, initially discovered in Brazil and labeled P.1
  • 1440 are the Delta variant, first found in India and previously referred to as B.1.617
  • 268 cases had a mutation detected, but have not yet confirmed a variant strain

Hospitalizations have increased by one unit in the past 24 hours, now to 17. There are 10 people receiving care in intensive care units in the region.

In Waterloo region, there are four active outbreaks of COVID-19.

On Wednesday, 1,792 other doses of the COVID-19 vaccine were put to arms.

Since the start of vaccine deployment, 805,385 doses have now been administered in the Waterloo region.

More than 84.5% of residents aged 12 and over have now received at least one dose, while 76.59% of the region’s eligible population are fully immunized.

Province-wide, 531 new cases of COVID-19 were reported in Thursday’s update.

Ontario’s seven-day moving average climbed to 498, a jump from 375 at the same time last week.

Health officials have now confirmed 557,451 cases of COVID-19 and 9,448 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
