Wimbledon 2021: Roger Federer beats Frenchman Richard Gasquet to enter third round

Sixth seed Roger Federer stormed the third round at Wimbledon 2021 on Thursday. He beat Frenchman Richard Gasquet 7-6 (7/1), 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets.

Federer took his time finding the rhythm as he needed to save three break points in his first service game. After being pushed into the tiebreaker, the 20-time Grand Slam champion flipped the switch and showed what he’s known for.

As the sixth seed quickly shifted gears and began to dominate, his French rival couldn’t resist for long. Gasquet suffered the 11th consecutive defeat against Federer.

“It was a wonderful game for me and I’m really happy with my performance. I started after a point and that’s good, ”said Federer after winning the clash in the second round.

“It’s not the most important thing to feel your best in the first and second rounds. It is important not to go out. You have to go there naturally. I’m happy with my level at the moment. Today was special. It’s been a year and a half difficult in many ways, but for me with two surgeries it’s great, ”he added.

The 39-year-old Swiss tennis star is now the oldest man in 46 years to advance to the third round at Wimbledon. Federer will face Briton Cameron Norrie, who beat Australian Alex Bolt, for a place in the last 16.
