As the sixth seed quickly shifted gears and began to dominate, his French rival couldn’t resist for long. Gasquet suffered the 11th consecutive defeat against Federer.
“It was a wonderful game for me and I’m really happy with my performance. I started after a point and that’s good, ”said Federer after winning the clash in the second round.
“It’s not the most important thing to feel your best in the first and second rounds. It is important not to go out. You have to go there naturally. I’m happy with my level at the moment. Today was special. It’s been a year and a half difficult in many ways, but for me with two surgeries it’s great, ”he added.
The 39-year-old Swiss tennis star is now the oldest man in 46 years to advance to the third round at Wimbledon. Federer will face Briton Cameron Norrie, who beat Australian Alex Bolt, for a place in the last 16.
