It’s official, the BBC has announced that Jodie Whittaker is leaving ‘Doctor Who’ after its upcoming thirteenth season – not only that, but showrunner Chris Chibnall is also coming out at the same time.
The Beeb says the plan is for the show’s truncated and serialized thirteenth season to air later this year as a six-part event series.
Then, in 2022, we’ll see Whittaker in three specials – two previously announced and now a third newly announced adventure feature film. This third will see us bid farewell to Whittaker’s 13th Doctor who will regenerate in a new form.
With the exception of Christopher Eccleston who came out after one, modern “Doctor Who” has typically seen the actor playing The Doctor come out after three seasons and several specials during their run. This was true for David Tennant, Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi, and now Whittaker.
Speculation about his potential replacement is expected to begin soon.
