Dallas : An unopened copy of Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda, made in 1987, sold at auction for $ 870,000.

Heritage Auctions in Dallas said the video game sold on July 9. An anonymous bidder purchased the game after the $ 100,000 auction began.

The auction house stated that it was a rare version which was created during a limited production which took place for a few months at the end of 1987. The Legend of Zelda is a game of popular fantasy adventure that was first published in 1986.

“The Legend of Zelda marks the beginning of one of the most important sagas in video games; its historical importance cannot be underestimated… it is a true collector’s item. This is the only copy of this production series that we have ever offered in a sealed condition, and could very well be the only one we have ever offered in this elite level of preservation in many years, ”a Heritage video game specialist Valarie McLeckie said in a statement.

In April, the auction house sold an unopened copy of Super Mario Bros. from Nintendo, bought in 1986 and left in a desk drawer for $ 660,000.

The game debuted in 1986 in Japan and quickly conquered the gaming market in the United States, becoming one of the most famous franchises in video game history. In the past, a game was often discovered years after it was left in a drawer or closet.
