LONDON – Two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine from Pfizer or AstraZeneca are almost as effective against the highly transmissible variant of the Delta coronavirus as against the previously dominant Alpha variant, a study published Wednesday showed.

Officials say the vaccines are highly effective against the Delta variant, now the dominant variant worldwide, although the study reiterated that a single shot of the vaccine is not enough for high protection.

The study, published in the New England Journal of Medicine, confirms the main results given by Public Health England in May on the effectiveness of COVID-19 vaccines manufactured by Pfizer-BioNTech and Oxford-AstraZeneca, based on data from the world real.

Wednesday’s study found that two doses of the Pfizer injection was 88% effective in preventing symptomatic Delta variant disease, compared to 93.7% against the Alpha variant, roughly the same as before. .

Two AstraZeneca vaccine injections were 67% effective against the Delta variant, compared to 60% initially reported, and 74.5% effective against the Alpha variant, against an initial estimate of 66% effectiveness.

“Only modest differences in vaccine efficacy were noted with the Delta variant versus the Alpha variant after receiving two doses of the vaccine,” researchers from Public Health England wrote in the study.

Data from Israel estimated Pfizer’s vaccine to be less effective against symptomatic illnesses, although protection against serious illnesses remains high.

PHE previously said that a first dose of either vaccine was about 33% effective against symptomatic Delta variant disease.

The full study published Wednesday found that one dose of Pfizer’s vaccine was 36% effective and one dose of AstraZeneca’s vaccine was about 30% effective.

“Our finding of reduced efficacy after the first dose would support efforts to maximize vaccine uptake with two doses among vulnerable groups in the context of the Delta variant circulation,” the study authors said. .
