LOUIS – A franchise that has struggled to develop its own star pitcher traded in its best local pitcher in years on Friday morning for a massive comeback. With its commercial value at its peak and an imminent departure expected after the 2022 season, the double All-star pitcher José Berríos was traded by the Twins to the Toronto Blue Jays for two top 100 prospects. Fueled by a bidding war between several upstart teams in hopes of taking the next step, the Twins have been given a pair of prospects that he hopes can help the franchise achieve lasting success. In return for Berríos, who is 7-5 with a 3.48 ERA and 126 strikeouts in 121 2/3 innings this season, the Twins welcome infielder / outfielder Austin Martin, whom Keith Law Athletic had ranked 12th in his most recent top 50 ranking and pitcher Simeon Woods Richardson. While Law hasn’t listed Woods-Richardson among his top 100 prospects, the Team USA pitcher is listed as the No.68 prospect by MLB Pipeline. While the Twins recently made a strong push to sign outfielder Byron Buxton for a contract extension, no such effort has been made with Berríos. The right-hander has made it clear that he wants to test free agency after the 2022 season and is not interested in an extension. Although the Twins hope to complete an overtime with Berríos each of the past dead seasons, no attempt has ever come close.
