Tokyo 2020 Olympics: Dina Asher-Smith fails in 100m final

Dina Asher-Smith was unable to secure an automatic qualifying spot or fastest loser space

Dina Asher-Smith was eliminated from the women’s 100m in the semi-final of the Tokyo Olympics.

However, Team GB’s Daryll Neita managed to secure last place among the fastest losers with his semi-final of 11 seconds flat.

Asher-Smith, the 100m silver medalist at the 2019 world championships, ran in the first of three semi-finals and recorded a time of 11.05.

The 25-year-old’s time was well below her personal best [10.83] and the best of the season [10.91].

Elaine Thompson-Herah won the Asher-Smith round, with Ajla Del Ponte taking second place in automatic qualifying.

Britain’s Asha Philip’s campaign also ended as she finished last in the second semi-final.

Asher-Smith clocked 11.07 seconds in his first run on Friday. She appeared to slow down and finished second behind Teahna Daniels of the United States.

Her qualifying time was only 11th in the field, but the British athlete was adamant that she was happy and had “another level” to give in the next stage.

At the start of the semi-final, it looked like Asher-Smith was right. She made an explosive start out of the blocks and headed for Thompson-Herah at about 60m.

However, in the last stages, she struggled to find other equipment; Del Ponte brought her back and Asher-Smith’s 11:05 am time left her with an anxious wait.

After the second round of the semi-final, the British sprinter remained in the second-fastest losing space, before her GB team colleague – Neita – took an 11-second lead in the final semi-final and does not propel it to the post.

The 25-year-old and her trainer John Blackie will now focus on the 200m, the event in which she is the reigning world champion. The playoff heats and the semi-final take place on Monday and the final will take place on Tuesday.
