Three women and a child were killed after their car was hit by a high-speed train at a level crossing in Spain.

Local reports indicated that the four victims could be members of the same family.

The accident happened around 5.15 p.m. this afternoon at a station in Novelda near Alicante on the Costa Blanca.

The Intercity train that struck the vehicle was traveling from Barcelona to Lorca near Murcia in south-eastern Spain.

None of the passengers on the train were injured in the crash, although a woman on board was treated for a panic attack.

The mayor of Novelda, Fran Martinez, visited the scene of the tragedy as soon as he was told that the victims could be from Petrer, a ten-minute drive away.

Four coaches have been mobilized to take train passengers to their final destination as investigations on the site continue.

Early reports indicate that the victims may have passed through a closed barrier at the crossing before being struck.
