‘They can do it fast, my business can’t’: Bommai says he will implement Mekedatu project

Karnataka’s new chief minister, Basavaraj Bommai, said on Saturday that the state would get approval from the Center for the Mekedatu drinking water project on the Cauvery River. He also said Karnataka would implement it despite any opposition from neighboring Tamil Nadu.

Bommai’s comments came after Tamil Nadu Bharatiya Janata Party’s newly appointed chairman K Annamalai announced that the Tamil Nadu BJP unit would protest Karnataka’s decision to go ahead with the Mekedatu project.

“He (Annamalai) will do his job. It does not concern us. Annamalai fasting is none of my business. We will get approval for this. Let anyone fast or eat, ”said Bommai, quoted by the PTI news agency. Bommai added that Karnataka has the rights to the river water and will implement the project. He added that a detailed project report has been prepared and submitted to the Center for approval.

BJP’s Tamil Nadu State Unit will observe a day-long fast in the Cauvery Delta region on August 5 to protest the decision made by the Karnataka government. Karnataka is also ruled by the BJP.
