The Republican Senator has attacked President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris for the administration’s immigration policy at the US-Mexico border, and accused those entering the United States of spreading the virus.
The Biden administration is reportedly considering ending the Trump-era public health rule that allowed authorities to turn back migrants at the border during the pandemic.
“Understand this, if the Biden administration ends Title 42, it will release illegal immigrants in your community who are positive for Covid,” Cruz said at a press conference this week.
“We are seeing Covid positivity rates increasing in South Texas. We are seeing Covid positivity increase in Laredo. We are seeing Covid positivity increase in San Antonio. “
He added: “Most of these illegal immigrants arriving have not been vaccinated. They are caged with other people who are HIV positive; they spread Covid and then release Covid in our communities. This is madness.
Texas has recorded more than 3 million cases of Covid during the pandemic and 52,919 deaths.
Public health data shows Texas lags significantly behind other major states in immunization. Only 42.6% of the population is fully vaccinated in Lone Star State, compared to 52% in California and 55% in New York.
In March, Robert Fenton, acting chief of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), told lawmakers that less than 6% of Covid-19 tests for migrants at the US-Mexico border came back positive, below the rate of overall positivity in the state of Texas.
Conservative political analyst Bill Kristol has criticized Senator Cruz’s claims for having no basis in reality.
Mr. Cruz was also attacked by Shannon Watts, the founder of the gun action group Moms Demand Action.
“On August 2, it will be two years since an armed man – motivated by racism – drove nine hours to El Paso to shoot and kill immigrants. Ted Cruz knows full well that his dangerous rhetoric puts a target on the back of every brunette in Texas, ”she tweeted.
Mr. Cruz was also mocked by Project Lincoln co-founder Reed Galen.
“It doesn’t, Ted. It’s because you and all of your vaccinated friends are telling your supporters to catch Covid. To own the libs by dying for your ambition and your cynicism, ”he tweeted.
The independent contacted Mr Cruz’s office for comment.
