Syria claims Israeli airstrikes target northern Aleppo region – .

The Israeli air force launched a number of missiles on Monday evening at targets near the Syrian city of Aleppo, Syrian state media reported.

The state-run SANA news agency said Syrian air defenses repelled strikes near the town of al-Safirah, southeast of Aleppo. Syrian war analysts generally dismiss regular allegations of military interceptions as empty bogus boasting.

There were no immediate reports of casualties and damage.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a war monitor that has militants on the ground in Syria, said the Israeli strikes targeted arms depots belonging to militias supported by the Iran operating in the region. The group said the strikes were followed by heavy explosions. The arms depots were located inside Syrian military posts, the group said.

A video posted to social media showed a series of explosions in the area, while a video posted by SANA appeared to show a missile moving through the sky as anti-aircraft fire was directed towards it.

The Israel Defense Forces did not comment on the reported strikes, in line with their long-standing policy of neither confirming nor denying its activities in Syria.

Aleppo is a large city in northern Syria, near its border with Turkey, and is a rare – but not unprecedented – site for Israeli airstrikes. The last reported Israeli strikes in the region date back to September 2020.

The IDF has launched hundreds of strikes in Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011 against measures taken by Iran to establish a permanent military presence in the country and efforts to transport advanced and revolutionary weapons to groups terrorists in the region, mainly Hezbollah. .

The pace of attacks has slowed considerably in recent months.

This is the first reported Israeli strike on Syria since early June, when airstrikes targeted Air Force positions near the village of Khirbet al-Tin on the outskirts of Homs, as well as a arms depot belonging to the Lebanese terrorist group Hezbollah.

The Israeli Air Force also hit targets in several regions of Syria, in the capital Damascus as well as in the provinces of Hama and Lattakia. Eleven Syrian soldiers were reportedly killed in these strikes.
