The third and final matchday of the group stage of the Olympic Football Games will take place on Wednesday, as there are plenty of places up for grabs as it’s all about playing on the wire. Japan are the only team to have won their first two matches, and they are the closest to securing their spot as a win or draw would be enough to secure a place in the quarter-finals. They will face France, who are in desperate need of a win if they are to have any chance of escaping the group stage.

Mexico will also need to secure a result against South Africa to book their ticket, as a win would allow them to advance to the quarter-finals regardless of other results. A draw would also allow them to advance as long as Japan does not lose to France. Mexico scored a big 4-1 victory over France in their opener, but fell 2-1 to Japan in the second game. South Africa have already been mathematically eliminated as they occupy the bottom of Group A with zero points, so regardless of their result against Mexico, they will return home.

All matches will be available live on NBCOlympics.com.

The Mexican team have been fantastic in this tournament, routing France with a big 4-1 score to open the campaign. Even though they allowed two goals at the start of their second game against Japan, they managed to recover and score one in the 86th minute, giving their side hope even after Yohan Vázquez was sent off with a red in the 67th minute. South Africa have struggled, losing their opening two games to Japan and France, and neither are they expected to get a result against Mexico.
