TUCSON, ARIZ. – A series of attacks Sunday afternoon in Arizona ended with five people shot dead, including one dead, and two or three children missing, Tucson police said. The suspect in the attacks was seriously injured by an officer.

A 35-year-old man is accused of opening fire on an ambulance team around 3:45 p.m. Sunday, Tucson Police Chief Chris Magnus told media. The ambulance driver, a 20-year-old male, was shot in the head, and a paramedic in the passenger seat, a 21-year-old female, was shot in the chest and arm. The man was in critical condition and the woman was stable.

Next, the suspect is accused of going to the scene of a fire in a nearby house and shooting at firefighters and neighbors trying to put out the flames, the chief said. A neighbor was shot in the head and died. A firefighter was shot in the arm and another bullet grazed the head of another neighbor.

A “badly burned” body was found inside the house which was on fire, and “two or three” children who lived there are missing, Magnus said. Authorities were trying to determine the location of the children.

A police officer who responded to the scene encountered the suspect a few blocks away, the chief said. Police said the suspect rammed his SUV into the officer’s vehicle and opened fire. The officer fired back and shot the suspect, seriously injuring him, the chief said. The officer was not injured.

“It’s a very tragic, really horrible incident with a lot of unknowns,” Magnus said.

The investigation was ongoing. It is not known what triggered the attacks.
