Seven people hospitalized after fire in Mississauga home – .

Seven people are hospitalized as a precaution after a fire broke out in a Mississauga home on Saturday morning.

Shortly before 7:30 a.m., firefighters responded to a fire in a semi-detached house on Laddie Crescent, near Highway 427 and Derry Road East.

When firefighters arrived at the scene, they discovered thick smoke billowing from the garage.

“They encountered smoke. Once they opened the garage, they found the source of the fire and they were able to put it out quickly, ”Mississauga Fire Platoon Leader Steve Kraft told CP24.

Twelve people were taken from the house, including eight adults and four children, Kraft said.

Seven of these residents were taken to hospital as a precaution for potential smoke inhalation.

“I believe three adults and four children were taken to hospital. Fortunately, they’re all non-critical, so more careful than anything else, ”Kraft said.

The cause of the fire is unknown.

Kraft said a few families were believed to be living in the house.

Supreet Cheema lives in the house next door and said she was alerted by her dog to the fire.

“My puppy kept barking so we checked the door and saw that there were flames going up and we could see them from our window and it was black smoke. And that’s when we decided to run outside the house, call 911 and we saw that there was a fire outside the garage, ”Cheema said. at CP24.

She said she knocked on doors to alert residents to the fire, but no one responded.

“I’m just happy that everyone is doing well because there are also little kids living in the basement, and they weren’t up until the firefighters got here, which was terrifying,” he said. she declared.

Cheema said she believed there were 16 or 17 people living in the residence and not all of them were at home at the time of the fire.

“Honestly, it was some sort of disaster waiting to happen. We have already filed complaints with the city about the number of people living here, and nothing ever came of it, ”she said.

Kraft said residents will need to find other accommodation as the house is habitable due to the extensive damage.

“Everyone in the house will be moved. We actually help them find a place to go. They are going to be moved from the house, so there is significant smoke damage.

Kraft added that the damage is mostly in the basement, but the smoke damage is spread throughout the house.

Investigators are on site and are expected to stay there for a few hours.
