Somewhat surprisingly, Toronto nominated Payamps for an assignment last weekend. The right-hander had a good season, with an ERA of 2.70 / 4.59 SIERA in 30 relief innings. Payamps has only struck out 18.5% of batters faced (the league average for relievers is 24.5%), but he generated pounding strikes on 11.6% of his offers. Payamps has been throwing strikes at an average pace and has so far been excellent at avoiding damaging contact. The 27-year-old ranks at the 75th percentile or better in removing opponents barrel rate, hard contact rate and average exit speed, per Statcast.
Payamps is in his final minor league option year, which means the Royals can make him back and forth between Kansas City and Omaha for the remainder of this season. If he sticks to the 40-player roster over the winter, he will have to break camp on the active roster in 2022 or else be proposed to the league again.
