Robson Green reveals battle with alcohol and drugs as he struggles to face stardom – .

Robson Green has opened up about his battle with alcohol and drugs after battling stardom.
The Granchester star, 56, found herself in a “very dark place” and entered therapy after her father’s intervention.

Robson never spoke of what he went through as millions watched him star in the 1990s ITV military drama Soldier Soldier.

He reveals his love of fishing saved him on Robson and Jim’s Icelandic Fishing Adventure Monday on ITV.

He says, “I was only 26 when the real celebrity knocked on my door with a drama called Soldier Soldier watched by 21 million people.

“I was enjoying the glory. I appreciated the recognition, I appreciated all the approval. I enjoyed the rewards, I enjoyed the parties, I enjoyed the drink and everything that went with fame.

“But, and I wish it had been a more original story, my relationship was a car accident.

“And I was losing touch with what mattered in life.

“I grew up in a tight-knit mining community in the North East of England where my father worked in the mine. I started to have real celebrity, alcohol, and drug issues.

The Geordie actor says a meeting with his father, also called Robson, prompted him to seek help.

Robson says, “Daddy came along, he had worked hard all his life and he looks at his son who he gave everything to, blood, sweat and tears, and he says ‘Are you happy?’, And I ” Said ‘Yeah,’ but deep down I knew I wasn’t and realized I had nothing. Because all I did in my life was play.

“I was a nice person, always desperate for recognition, comfort and needed help. So I went to see a therapist. He said, ‘So tell me who Robson Green is. I said ‘I’m that guy who acts’. He said, ‘No, this is your career. Who are you?’ I had no idea.

The therapist discovered his love of fishing and suggested starting over.

Robson says, “Returning to fishing was a turning point for me. This has been and still is my route to Damascus. If I had the chance to go see this therapist again, I would say go fishing with me and you’ll see that’s who Robson Green is.

“I needed something in life that made sense and for me fishing makes sense. I learned so much from fishing and found an inner peace that I missed.

Robson and his close friend and actor James Murray, known as Jim, go fishing in Iceland. Jim says he used his love of the sport to help him cope after the 2009 death of Ella-Jayne, her eight-month-old baby with Cutting It co-star Sarah Parish.

Jim explains, “Fishing brought me out of a dark, deep hole and has been a part of my life ever since. “

Robson played Dave Tucker in Soldier Soldier, and his musical association with co-star Jerome Flynn led to a No1 with Unchained Melody.

He has a son, Taylor, now 20, with his second wife Vanya Seager, but they separated in 2011. He now lives in his native Northumberland with his partner Zoila Short and avoids the celebrity life.

“I don’t like to be seen as a celebrity,” he says. “I am a normal actor who survived. “

  • Robson and Jim’s Icelandic Fishing Adventure airs on ITV Monday at 10:45 p.m. ET.
