Quentin Tarantino has been in A mood for the last week or so, going to Joe Rogan’s podcast to pick up on the controversy over Once upon a time … in Hollywoodthe portrayal of Bruce Lee (saying, among other things, that anyone who has a problem with that and is not Shannon Lee can “go suck a cock”, exactly the kind of talk we expect from The Joe Rogan Experience). Tarantino too to continue Real time sympathize with Bill Maher over PC culture, which seems just as exhausting, and its novelization of Once upon a time … in Hollywood ended up being more of an alternate version of the movie that reworked some things that he thought people read too much about in the movie (i.e. Charles Manson stuff). It doesn’t quite follow the same theme as his media appearances, but it does indicate that Tarantino is spending time these days thinking about general culture and how people react to the art they consume.

Over the weekend, Tarantino’s Hot Take Summer continued, with him at Dax Shepard’s Chair expert podcast and share some thoughts on the American film industry. For starters, he says he bought the Vista Theater in Los Angeles on Sunset Boulevard (Going through Deadline), which he says “will show new movies coming out where they give us a movie copy.” This contrasts with Tarantino’s New Beverly Theater in LA, which is a revival house that mainly shows classic movies. Tarantino’s other talking point was that many movie chains that struggled to survive the pandemic deserved to die anyway, claiming that some channels have “taken all the specialness out of the movies anyway.”

Specifically, he takes issue with theaters that “show commercials throughout the event”, that “don’t dim the lights” and are full of “stadium seating” and “plastic crap”. He says he doesn’t mean “La-Z-Boy, order nachos and margaritas” theaters because he “likes the Alamo Drafthouse a lot”, but he wants to go to the theater when he goes to the theater, not ” a living room. “
